The Victron 12V/90Ah AGM battery is a sealed battery with a capacity of 90Ah based on VRLA technology. An AGM battery is also referred to as a multi-purpose or dual-purpose battery and is suitable for both slow discharge and the short-term delivery of high currents, for inverters, bow thrusters and winches. The battery terminals are made of copper with holes for M6 bolts to ensure a solid connection. Crimp cable lugs can be mounted directly onto the battery and separate battery terminals are not required. The batteries comply with both European CE and American UL specifications in flame-retardant ABS housings and are supplied with Victron Energy’s worldwide 2-year warranty.
AGM stands for Absorbed Glass Mat.
In AGM batteries, the electrolyte is absorbed in a fiberglass mat that is clamped between the plates. In an AGM battery, the charge carriers, hydrogen ions (H₂) and sulfate ions (SO₄), move more easily between the plates than in a gel battery.
VRLA technology
VRLA stands for Valve Regulated Lead Acid. This means the batteries are sealed. Only in the event of improper charging and/or damaged cells will gas escape through a safety valve. VRLA batteries are maintenance-free throughout their entire service life.
Low self-discharge
Thanks to the use of lead-calcium grids and very pure materials, Victron VRLA batteries can withstand long periods without charging. The self-discharge is less than 2% per month at a temperature of 20°C. This discharge rate doubles for every 10°C increase in temperature. Victron VRLA batteries can therefore be stored for up to one year without needing to be recharged, provided they are kept at relatively low temperatures.
Exceptional discharge recovery
Victron VRLA batteries recover very well, even after deep and prolonged discharges. Nevertheless, repeated deep and prolonged discharging has a negative impact on the lifespan of all lead-acid batteries. Victron batteries are no exception.
Battery discharge characteristics
The nominal capacity of Victron ‘Deep Cycle’ batteries refers to a 20-hour discharge (discharge current of 0.05C). The nominal capacity of Victron Tubular Plate Long Life batteries refers to a 10-hour discharge. The effective capacity decreases as the discharge current increases.
Charging current
The charging current of a VRLA battery should not exceed 0.2C (20A for a 100Ah battery). The temperature of a battery will increase by more than 10°C if the charging current exceeds 0.2C, and temperature compensation is then required.
